Mercury Free Dentistry

Dr. David Rush and his staff have been mercury free since 1998, and we strive to provide optimal health to each patient as we lower or eliminate your exposure to mercury. Our practice adheres to the highest standards of biocompatible dentistry as defined by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.   Facts about mercury free dentistry  Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive element on the earth.  Mercury vaporizes easily at room temperature, and in this state is odorless, colorless, and tasteless.  Inhaled mercury can be readily absorbed into the bloodstream.  Published research demonstrates that mercury is more toxic than lead, cadmium, or arsenic, and under laboratory conditions has produced brain cell deterioration similar to that seen in victims of Alzheimer’s disease.  Mercury can adversely affect the immune, urinary, cardiac, respiratory, and digestive systems.   Safe Removal of Amalgam Fillings

Over the years there has been some debate regarding the safety of amalgam (silver) fillings.  An amalgam filling is a blend of copper, silver, tin, and zinc, all bound together by elemental mercury.  In fact, mercury comprises about 50% of each amalgam filling.  The World Health Organization has concluded that dental fillings contribute more mercury to a person’s body than all other sources of mercury combined.

Although the ADA and FDA officially support the use of amalgam fillings as safe and effective,  in light of the possible damaging effects of exposure to vaporized mercury, many patients still opt to choose alternate treatments when available and/or to have old amalgam fillings removed safely.

Whenever a patient opts to remove an amalgam filling in our office, we protect you from any possible exposure to mercury vapors during the process by using rubber dams, high-vacuum mercury vapor removers, negative ionizing technology, high-volume water suction, and oxygen to avoid vapors getting into your respiratory system.

Our fillings and restorations are either tooth-colored porcelain or composite, which allows for a finished product that is healthy, beautiful, and natural-looking!

We remove up to 99% of the mercury from the waste-water leaving our office, which means less potential for environmental contamination of rivers and streams.
